Went out to Alkali Creek and took some pictures of the northern lights. Each picture was about a 20 minute exposure. I like the results quite a bit. Focusing is super hard in the dark, I'm very glad they are focusedAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06361396460258071119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8665716099645838623.post-22538694507912454602015-04-09T13:36:00.001-07:002015-04-09T13:36:48.789-07:00Star Trails I am going to attempt to take star trails this semester. The below site gives good tips on how to start.

Some tips include.
Use 20-30 second exposures stacked to limit noise and hot spots on censors. Have a remote sensor or duck tape the sensor down to not have camera shake. 2-3 hours can get good trails. To stitch the pictures together there are dedicated programs or Photoshop can be used.
Another great tip is go early and plan your shoot so you don't miss twilight to get the foreground.
I am happy with this picture. I think all my settings were set correctly and am happy with how I composed it. I used a brush to brighten the face of the bison and also brightened the shadows to ring out some more detail in the bison.

I am mostly happy with this picture. I wish I would have shot an a higher aperture as to get the tree a bit more in focus. It was very foggy so I'm not sure how in focus the tree could have been in through the fog.
I really like this picture, it is one of my personal favorites. I took this picture as a landscape and cropped to this aspect ratio. It does not have a high resolution and wont be able to be blown up big but that's not a problem for me because I wont ever blow it up! Im very happy with how this came out regardless of the resolution.
I'm happy with how this picture came out. The only thing which I think could be improved is to make the mountains in focus. I was limited to f5.6 because I didn't want to raise my ISO any more and couldn't shoot any longer of an exposure without having blur happen. For the early morning situation with lower light this turned out very well for me.
These are a quick selection of some of the better pictures I took at Yellowstone. I haven't finished editing all of my pictures yet but these are looking like some of the best. I had a 55mm-200mm lens on a cropped camera at Yellowstone which almost worked perfect. I was unable to get any good pictures of the wolfs or coyotes. Anything somewhat close to me I was able to capture.

I was up at flight ops and an incredible sunset happened. There was only a small gap between all the infrastructure which I could get a clear picture without light poles, planes, cars, and buildings. I do not know what the best picture is. All I know is that I tried to get every picture possible in hopes one would be good. I shot on 400ISO and f6.3 to f11. it was all hand help so I had to keep a high ISO and low aperture to keep the shutter speed fast. It was slightly windy so a high shutter speed was needed to prevent blur in the tree. I don't think the entire picture is in focus because of the low aperture settings. I would have rather had the great color and low noise with a little blur than noise and worse color.

ISO1600 24mm f11 1/2000
I took this driving down a road from Big Sky. For driving photos I wanted everything to be in focus because I had little time to compose the pictures. The high ISO helped me keep the shutter speed high so that I could prevent blur from the driving car. The wide angle also helped to prevent the blur.
ISO400 200mm f6.3 1/400
I was up at the airport working when I looked outside and saw an incredible sunset. I grabbed my camera climbed onto one of the wings of our planes and took this. I did not have a tripod and it was a bit windy. I needed to zoom in to full 200mm because this was shot between a lot of other airport junk and parked cars and planes. The 1/400 was almost enough to get all the motion blur out of the tree and the f6.3 was almost enough to get the tree in focus. I didn't want to raise my ISO any more because my camera doesn't take great pictures above 400. The colors were too good to try and shoot a higher ISO. I barely rose the saturation and vibrancy on this picture, the colors are very close to true.
ISO800 135mm f5.0 1/125
I was trying to take more sunset pictures but the sunset didn't get great and the light wasn't good. So I lowered my aperture and took this. The lighting was bad and the picture didn't look good in color.
ISO100 55mm f8 1/250
Took this earlier in the year while on a flight. The picture was taken through the planes window which caused some blur in the right side of the picture. The white balance was on incandescent and my camera was on jpg. This caused the color to be very blue and I could not edit the color to be correct. The picture looks much better in black and white. Jasper National Park is a place I would love to take a road trip to. It is located North of Banff National Park and West of Edmonton. It is the largest national park in Canada and home to very densely populated wildlife. The best time to go to Jasper would be late summer to early fall.

There are many ways to explore Jasper. A popular way is to drive and camp at the assortment of campsites. There are also hundreds of miles of trails which you can bike on, ride horses, or go backpacking. There are 82 backpacking campsites in Jasper.
There was fog! In my four years of living in Billings I have seen that thick of fog less than a handful of times. When I woke up I immediately wanted to get some pictures. However, I had lost my SD card for my DSLR and my phone was dead because I had forgot to charge it the night before. I charged my phone to 12% on the drive up to the the rims and ended up pleasantly surprised with the results from Auto on my camera from my phone. The results are below.
As an aviation student I have the opportunity to take my camera up with me while I fly. I managed to take my camera with me on my flight through the Beartooths and Paradise Valley. I didn't get as many quality pictures as I would have liked and learned some good lessons. Fist is set up your camera on the ground. My white balance was not on auto and all my pictures ended up extremely blue before editing. I did not open the window of the plane and all my pictures are blurred on the edges. My flight was at high noon so the lighting was not great. My headset also kept changing the settings on the camera which made it hard to shoot on a manual mode. I did end up taking some cool pictures, just not great award winning pictures like I tried to imagine.

This could be my favorite. This is looking North just Northwest of Gardiner at the start of Paradise Valley. The whole flight was surreal and this was one of the coolest spots I've flown through.
I remember we dipped down pretty low into a valley and flew almost uncomfortably close to some peaks. This was one of the peaks which caught my eye so I took a picture of it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06361396460258071119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8665716099645838623.post-12554646627483244282015-01-29T11:42:00.001-08:002015-01-29T11:42:18.621-08:00Phone Photography

I undoubtedly will take a lot of photos I this class with my phone. My phone is always on me and my dslr is almost never by my side. My phone camera is good but I could definitely use professional help when taking pictures with my phone.

The photo below was taken with my phone in the Bridgers just outside of Bozeman. Not the greatest picture but all I had on me was my phone. It was the middle of the day and the lighting was not great but in real life the view was still amazing. I used he panorama feature built into my phone to take the picture.

Below the picture are two links on how to take better pictures with a phone camera. A brief summary is: shoot in good light, have a clean lens, use a high resolution, take a lot of pictures, avoid digital zoom and experiment with white balance.

One of my favorite parts of photography is taking panoramas. I have only ever been able to take panoramas by using my phone because I have no idea how to stitch pictures together from my DSLR. The first picture below was taken with my phone camera. It was a calm morning with little wind and I thought the reflection off the lake was incredible looking. I wish I could have taken a better picture with a DSLR but I didn't know how to stitch the individual pictures together. I still like the results from this picture though.

For some tips on panoramas check out this article by Nikon. Basically the article says to use a tripod and shoot on manual not aperture priority mode. The biggest thing to do is to shoot every picture in the sequence at the same setting, including white balance. There should also be a considerable overlap from anywhere from 25% to 50% depending on the focal length. A shorter focal length should usually have more overlap.
As a pilot I greatly enjoy anything that has to do with flying through the air. When I do get any free time in the plane I usually try to take some pictures. The picture below was taken with my phones camera on a flight to Bozeman from Billings. It is looking south into the entrance of Paradise Valley. The picture is not great even by my standards I hope I can learn how to take much better photos by the end of this class.

An aerial photographer I just discovered is Larry Mayer. He is out of Billings and seems to take pictures of the surrounding areas. I enjoy his work and hope to learn from his photos on how to take a good picture.

http://www.larrymayer.com/aerials.html

This link gives some very good tips on how to take great aerial pictures. The article mentions how composing a photo is a little different from the sky than from the ground. One problem is that a tripod wont work in the air. The plane is moving on its own and the article says to stabilize the camera on the window instead. Another problem about shooting in the air is the photographer has to shoot through a window. This window is rarely made of glass in small planes. This can cause bad reflections, blurry photos, scratches and diminished picture quality. The article gives great tips and tricks to anyone looking to shoot from the sky.
I like to think I can take super cool photos but honestly I have no idea what I'm doing when my camera leave AUTO. I have always been interested in photography, especially nature photography, but have never taken the time to learn how to take awesome photos the correct way. One main thing I want to accomplish is improve my skills in taking and editing pictures.

I quickly looked over most of the pictures I have taken in the last few years and have posted the best below. I want to use them as a benchmark so I can see how I will improve throughout the semester. The photos are taken from an assortment of cameras. Some are from my DSLR, some are from my GoPro and the rest are from my phone.

This picture had no planning or thought put into it. I was on a hike and thought this log jam at the end of the lake looked cool so I just very quickly snapped a photo and I personally love the result. I think I edited it but I had no idea what I was doing and just pressed buttons until it looked cool.

This is one the thousands of GoPro photos I've snapped. My strategy with GoPro photography is that I will literally take thousands of random pictures and just hope I get a few good looking ones. This is one of my good looking ones! I was riding my bike with my GoPro faced straight up and it was taking pictures I think every 5 seconds. This is picture is attributed to luck.

Another GoPro picture. I used the same strategy as above. I was hiking the Rims in Billings and just taking pictures of everything in sight.

I'm not sure if nature photography can include people but since I don't know I'm including this photo for my first blog post. Again another random GoPro photo while I was running around the Oregon coast. I do not know what makes a picture better than another picture in the technical photography sense but I hope this one is qualified as good because it may be my favorite picture I have ever taken.

I hope to include some very cool pictures from planes. I am in the aviation program at Rocky and want to include the perspective from the air. I took this while flying to Bozeman from Billings.

One of my favorite types of pictures is the panorama. With my phone, I probably take an unhealthy amount of panoramas. This is one of my favorites though. This was taken from my dock back at my parents house. Things I like are the reflection on the lake and the clouds. The wierd part of this picture is that the far left of the picture is looking a bit Northwest while the right side of the picture is looking South. This makes it not accurately represent what a person would see while looking out in the same spot but I still like the picture quite a bit.
